I recently bought a new printer. I think everything will be installed quickly and easily on my ubuntu, but I was wrong.

The first step is downloading the rebuilt library, why rebuild, because the original with the official site of the Canon are not so good.

Let’s start, run the following command:

cd ~ wget http://arvat.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Canon-Pixma-iP1900-iP1800.tar.gz

Next, unpack the archive and install the deb files in the system:

sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-ip1900series_3.00-1_i386.deb

You will find a file canonip1900.ppd in archive, copy it in the directory /usr/share/ppd/

sudo mv canonip1900.ppd /usr/share/ppd/

Connect your printer, you will find the driver window. Choose to specify the PPD file canonip1900.ppd.

This ppd file is very important to install because it enables the grayscale printing, the economic modes, and the higher resolutions.

That’s all. Print a test page and use your printer.
