Every new release of Watchtower Library seems to require a new set of instructions to install, and Watchtower Library 2010 is no exception. After happily using the 2009 edition on Ubuntu for some time, I installed the new version expecting the same flawless behaviour; however it nastily crashed and burned with “The program WTLibrary.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close…”.
If you are on a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04, then you need to install Wine. To do this, go to Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center and type “wine” without the quotes into the search box. Install the “Wine Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer”.
Now insert your Watchtower Library 2010 CD-ROM into the drive, and open a terminal window. Type:
If that doesn’t work, then try:
wine /media/cdrom/WTLIB10E/Setup.exeAllow the installation to complete, and make sure that you opt to copy the files to the hard drive. Now, when you try to run Watchtower Library, you may get the dreaded “The program WTLibrary.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close” error. If so, then here is how to resolve it:
- Download iphlpapi.dll from this link
- Copy it to your ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 folder. If the DLL has been downloaded to the Downloads folder, the the following command should do it:
Now go to the Applications menu, and choose the Wine section, followed by Configure Wine.
Click on the Libraries tab and, under the “New override for library” heading, type:
Click the Add button, and answer Yes to the warning prompt.
Click OK to close the Wine Configuration applet, and Watchtower Library should now launch successfully.

When I first ran it, though, again all of the text in the browser window appeared as small squares. This happened with the 2009 edition as well. If you experience the same problem then, from within Watchtower Library itself, go to Library -> Properties and you’ll notice the “Browser Text” font selection is blank. Set the font to Liberation Sans, size 10pt and the problem will be fixed.
