There is a famous latin phrase which is translated as ‘Here Be Lions’ (or ‘Dragons’, as some sources suggest). It is a famous inscription which was meant to mark unknown/unexplored lands on ancient maps.
I find it curious that people associated ‘unfamiliarity’ to ‘danger’, but it seems that the ancient mentality is still (kind of) preserved nowadays. We are partially timid in front of new experiences/ways of thinking/people and build our own boundaries against unexplored territories. However, people learned to build a certain comfort inventing a motivational meaning to the word ‘risk’. Russians say Кто не рискует, тот не пьет шампанское (He who doesn’t risk, doesn’t drink champagne).
There is an obvious tendency in the past few years – to be open in front of new challenges and bla-bla-bla (even CV writing Guides tell you to be like that).
Is it because people are no longer afraid of lions? Or are there too many lions everywhere which are waiting for you to fight for your territory?
