The Moldova Foundation in Washington, DC, in partnership with the mayoralty of Mihaileni, Rascani county, Republic of Moldova, is asking for your donation to support the installment of a bronze bust of Eugen Coseriu (1921-2002), a Romanian international authority in Romance philology (see below a summary of his biography), in his native village Mihaileni.
Sculptor Gheorghe Gheorghiţa from Iasi, Romania, will author the bust and will cast it (see the bust’s initial version attached) in the city where Coseriu studied in early 1940s. All works, including the bust’s cast in bronze (the bulk of the cost), its platform installation, are estimated at 12.2 thous. USD or 9.4 thous. EUR. Our aim is to cover at least 1/3 of this project’s cost to help the people in the Moldovan village, who came with this initiative and asked me – via mayor Valerian Cecan – for support. Any contribution will be appreciated. Money raised by the Moldova Foundation will be sent via wire bank transfer to the sculptor in Iasi. A group of journalists from Moldova.org will cover the event in Mihaileni and we will send a video reportage to donors.

COSERIU, EUGENIO (1921-2002). Professor of linguistics and an international authority in Romance philology. Eugen Coşeriu (italianized name: Eugenio Coseriu) was born in Mihăileni, Râşcani, north of Bălţi. He studied linguistics in Iaşi, then continued his studies in Italy where he earned a doctor’s degree in linguistics in Rome (1944) and in philosophy in Milan (1949). In 1951, he moved to South America and settled in Uruguay where, till 1963, he taught at the University of Montevideo. In 1963, Coseriu returned to Europe and held teaching positions at the Universities of Coimbra (Portugal) Strasbourg (France) and Bonn, Frankfurt and Tübingen (Germany).
Coseriu wrote extensively on the unity of the Romanian language and its relation to other Romance languages. In The Language and Folklore of Bessarabia, Bessarabian Linguistic Materials and A Geography of Linguistics he gave fresh appraisals of the relationships and links between Romanian and its kindred Latin-origin languages spoken in Europe and the Americas. In 1997, in recognition of his outstanding scholarly contributions to the revival of Moldova’s cultural and linguistic legacy, Moldova’s President Petru Lucinschi awarded Professor Coseriu Moldova’s highest medal— Ordinul Republicii (Order of the Republic).
