Fire Tower Challenge/Waterfalls hike: Hunter Mountain, Kaaterskill/Bastion Falls

At 4,040 feet, Hunter Mountain is the highest fire tower mountain in New York State and the 2nd highest in the northeast United States behind Avery Peak on Maine's Mount Bigelow. It's surprising that the tallest mountain in the Fire Tower Challenge is located in the Catskills, not in the Adirondacks. Your vantage point from atop the tower will be 4,100 feet.

We will be hiking the Spruceton Trail from the trailhead parking area on Spruceton Hollow Road (Greene County Route 6). This is a moderate 3.4 mile hike to the tower with two great lookout points on the way: first at the location where the John Robb Lean-to stands (or once stood: everything I've read says it burned down, but the DEC lists it as active) and then again a half-mile later. The fire tower views are great in all directions.

After we successfully summit Hunter, we will drive 19 miles to Kaaterskill Falls and Bastion Falls. At 260 feet tall, Kaaterskill Falls is the highest two-tiered waterfall in New York State. Its upper tier measures 175 feet and its lower tier is 85 feet tall. Bastion Falls is visible from the road and is about 30 feet tall. You can explore around as much as you want, take pictures, or soak your feet to recover from the Hunter Mtn. hike.
