As soon as I arrived in Algarve, my mom kept insisting that I see the Castle of Silves. Her reasons were simple: it’s beautiful and has an exquisite cafe where they cook really good desserts; no need to tell me twice about sugar, the next day I was there.

What my most adored mummy did miss telling was that the Castle is a historical treasure. Formerly the Capital of the Moorish Kingdom, the Castle of Silves has been gloriously standing since the 8th/13th century, having had survived several earthquakes. As a big history fan, being surrounded by the red walls are filled with history made me feel very intense and sad at the same time. History takes away so many lives, and centuries later, and you realize that places like these are more or less the only reminder of our ancestors…
