A ceramic piece engraved with unknown symbols that could prove the existence of writing in early Neolithic was discovered by archaeologists on site Orastie – Sibiu motorway, north of Miercurea Sibiului, has announced Mr. Sabin Luca, the manager of Brukenthal Museum. The ceramic piece was found in a housing complex dating from before the year 6000 BC.
The piece could prove that at that time there writing systems and, according to Sabin Luca, is “the only known fragment, in this moment, chronologically, with such symbols.”
“I am shocked … Obviously it’s a system of putting something in an order, with different types, and will be an opportunity for disputes. When it will appear in the international world, a storm will raise,” said the manager of the National Museum Brukenthal.
Housing complex was discovered in the archaeological site called “Miercurea Sibiului 2″, located in north of the city Miercurea Sibiului, on Valea Grabovei, and it sets the first wave of Neolithic in Romania.
“We had the chance to discover yet another site of the first wave of Neolithic in Romania. (…) This is due to some communities who came at that time from somewhere from Macedonia, the closest analogies for the discovered materials are in Serbian Macedonia and the Greek side of Macedonia, so northern Greece.It’s strange, but that is history. Scientifically speaking, it is a great discovery, “said Sabin Luca.
Archaeologists from Sibiu have explored the three dwellings, along with ovens and thousands of fragments of ceramic, but it could be, after their calculations, another three to four houses of this period which were left unexplored nearby.
“These findings show that these communities suddenly came with the new known technology from Neolithic: agriculture, animal raising, other types of architecture, other social relations, comparing to hunters who were standing by and they became the owners this area first – Oltenia, a part of Banat and the western half of Transylvania”, said Sabin Luca.
Excavations were done at a depth of about five meters, from March to June this year.
On site Miercurea Sibiului 2, 29 complexes with archaeological material were found, belonging to Early Neolithic – Starcevo-Cris culture, the first Iron Age and early medieval period.
