Speculation is mounting over the health of the Chinese leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping who has not been seen in public for 11 days and has cancelled a series of meetings with foreign visitors.
Mr Xi, who is vice president, was last seen at the opening of the Communist Party training academy’s autumn session on September 1.
Since then, the 59-year-old has cancelled meetings with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Singaporean prime minister Lee Hsien Loong and Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
He also missed an emergency meeting of the Central Military Commission to discuss earthquake recovery work in the country.
Chinese-language websites based overseas have been filled with speculation of an alleged health crisis.
Rumours ranged from him suffering from a back injury picked up while swimming, a serious illness and even a staged car crash as part of a political feud – although the website, Boxun, later retracted that claim.
