• The original Smart Car was created in Hambach, Germany, in 1994 by the Swiss watch company Swatch under the name Swatchmobile.
• The car was created to be compact and affordable, using a hybrid engine to help increase gas mileage. The first car by Smart, the Smart City-Coupe actually went on the market in 1997 in Europe. The company was eventually purchased by Mercedes-Benz in 2006, and is now has a variety of different models that are available in 37 countries around the world.
• A Smart Car is a two-person vehicle designed to be the size of the width of a traditional parking space (250 centimeters). What that means is that theoretically two or three Smart Cars can park in a spot that will only fit one traditional automobile.
