Cuvântul foot este unul dintre cele mai vechi în limba engleză:

Cuvântul foot poate fi găsit în multe expresii idiomatice ale limbii engleze.

foot the bill — a achita nota de plată:
I’ll go to the convention if the company will foot the bill. (Voi merge la congres în cazul în care compania va suporta toate cheltuielile.)
have one foot in the grave – a fi cu un picior în groapă:
When you had the flu, you looked as if you had one foot in the grave. (Când ai avut gripa, arătai ca şi cum ai avea un picior în mormânt.)
to get cold feet – a-l trece sudorile, a-l lua cu frig, a sta cu frica în sân, a-i intra frica în oase, a-l trece răcorile, a-i îngheţa sângele în vine, a-şi pierde entuziasmul (in ultima clipa), a-şi pierde curajul (in ultima clipa):
It’s the morning of the wedding and the bride has cold feet. (Este dimineaţa zilei de nuntă şi mireasa are mari emoţii.)
to land on your feet – a trece printr-o situaţie dificilă fără daună:
Don’t worry about Jack in this storm. He always lands on his feet. (Nu vă faceţi griji pentru Jack în această furtună. El totdeauna ştie să iasă din situaţie.)
not to put a foot wrong – a nu da greş:
Mr. Perfect there never puts a foot wrong with the boss. (Dl. Perfect nu se ceartă niciodată cu şeful.)
to put one’s feet up – a relaxa:
Now that you’ve finished the project, you can put your feet up for awhile. (Acum, când aţi terminat proiectul, aveţi posibilitatea să vă odihniţi ceva timp.)
My foot! – interjecţie ce exprimă neîncrederea:
Abner Potts made a perfect score on the exam? My foot! (Abner Potts a primit notă bună la examen? Cum de?!)
