Automatically este un adverb (cuvântul care determină un verb, adjectiv, sau un alt adverb).
Multe adverbe se formează de la adjective + ly, de exemplu, quickly, shortly, calmly.
Pentru a forma un adverb la majoritatea adjectivelor care se termină în ic, de exemplu automatic, se adaugă terminaţia ally.
Adverbe pot să apară la începutul, mijlocul sau sfârşitul propoziţiei.
Quickly, she ran down the street.
She ran quickly down the street.
She ran down the street quickly.
Totuşi, adverbul niciodată nu se pune între subiect şi complementul său.
Corect: I hungrily ate an apple.
Incorect: I ate hungrily an apple.
