During the last day of this work-have-fun-and-promote-Moldovan-wines campaign were visited two different wineries. One is a part of a family business, the other one is a well-known, huge winery. Nevertheless both of them were amazing!
Gitana Winery was founded in the first half of the XVIIIth century, when two brothers of Greek origin, attracted by the unique character of the region, bought several vineyards and set up a small winery in the village of Tiganca (gipsy). During the Soviet period, Tiganca Winery became a real “wine factory” producing high quality wines, but it lasted until 1985, when started the alcohol prohibition campaign in all Soviet countries. In 1999 Tiganca Winery was bought by Dulgher family and that’s how this 360 ha vineyard revived. The owners have changed the brand name into “Gitana Winery” and appeared on the market with 2 amazing and unforgettable wines: La Petite Sophie and Lupi (Wolves), which soon became symbols of this winery.
Bostavan winery was founded in 2002 with an investment of $20 million. It operates two production facilities — a cellar in Etulia which is located in the south of Moldova and is well suited for red grape production, and another in Oneşti which is located in the center of Moldova where white grapes thrive. The first wine was produced in 2003. And, since then, Bostavan has become a well established company with sales around the world. Today, Bostavan exports its wines in more than 20 countries worldwide, including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Baltic States, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Israel, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea and others. In 2008, Bostavan had the largest share of the still wine market in Moldova, and was the leading exporter as well.
