Saskatchewan became the first canadian province or territory to allow applications for immigration to be made online. The website will provide comprehensive information about immigration, including how to apply for the Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Programas well as allow the applicant to track the status of their application. Provincial Minister Rob Norris thinks that this move further “demonstrates the real benefits of co-operation with Ottawa.” This is in reference to the funds provided by the federal government – approximately $450,000.Additional benefits for this new website include reducing processing times of applications, increasing the efficiency within the provincial office as well as allowing staff to focus on processing the applications.
More importantly, the province hopes this will act as incentive to attract more prospective immigrants to choose Saskatchewan as their place to settle in Canada. Last year, an estimated 9,000 immigrants made Saskatchewan their new home, this year the goal is to attract 10,000. An increase in immigration results in an increase in population as well as economic growth.
There is a growing need to fill employment opportunities in the province as well as foster diversity within communities as they are becoming very inclusive. “We want to foster and facilitate increasingly diverse, dynamic and cosmopolitan communities,” said Norris.
Currently plans are underway to enhance services that will assist immigrants to settle in over 160 communities in Saskatchewan.
