Adjectivele care se termină cu е, primesc -r, -st.
white – whiter – the whitest
Adjectivele care se termină cu consoană + vocală accentuată + consoană ultima consoană se dublează:
red – redder – the reddest
hot – hotter – the hottest
Dacă adjectivul se termină cu у, atunci у se transformă în i.
dirty – dirtier – dirtiest
messy – messier – messiest

Note:
a. La formarea propozițiilor în care se folosesc adjective la gradele de comparație se folosește conjuncția than (decât).
This room is larger than that. – Această odaie este mai mare decât aceia.
b. În compararea a două obiecte având calitatea similară, se folosește construcția as …as (tot așa de …ca și).
This book is as interesting as that. – Această carte este tot așa de interesantă ca și aceia.
